Founded in 1935, the Overhead Door Company of Denver™ has been family-owned and operated throughout its history. For the last forty plus years, the Pettyjohn family has taken pride in servicing the Greater Denver area. During that time, we’ve strived to act ethically in everything we do. We treat our employees like family, and many have been with us for decades. This attitude also extends to our community as we are consistently fair and honest with our customers, while providing the best service and installation in the industry. We are proud of the forty plus years that we have been involved in the garage door business and intend to continue serving Colorado and Wyoming with the same commitment and excellence for many years to come.

OUR STORY

The story of Overhead Door™ began in 1921, when its founder, C.G. Johnson, revolutionized the garage door industry by inventing the upward-lifting garage door. Just a few years later, in 1926, he introduced the electric garage door opener, further transforming convenience and functionality. For over a century, the Overhead Door name has symbolized outstanding quality, technical know-how, and dependable service.

This legacy of innovation and reliability inspired Chauncey Kerr to establish the Overhead Door Company of Denver™ in 1935. Under his leadership, the company flourished, eventually becoming Colorado’s top garage door provider over the next four decades. By the mid-1970s, Mr. Kerr retired, leaving behind a strong and respected foundation.

In 1976, a new chapter began when Donald Simpson, Perry Johnson, Dudley Pace, and Robert Esterl founded the Rio Door Company to uphold the Overhead Door™ brand in northern Colorado. Not long after, they restored the name to Overhead Door Company of Denver™, honoring the long-standing tradition that began in 1935. Around 1980, they passed ownership to Robert Hagman.

A few years later, in 1983, Robert and Larry Pettyjohn became the new owners. When Larry decided to return to his previous business in the mid-1980s, Robert’s wife, Beth Ann, acquired his share and partnered with her husband in managing the company—a role they both continue to this day. For more than 40 years, the Pettyjohns have expanded operations from Denver to include locations in Cheyenne, Fort Collins, and throughout Colorado’s mountain communities. Since 2001, other family members have assumed roles from door installation to management. Currently, Robert and Beth Ann’s sons, Rob and Matt, hold management roles with the company.

With deep respect for the past and a focus on excellence, the Pettyjohn family and their dedicated team remain committed to continuing the high standards set by Chauncey Kerr over eighty years ago.
